This is especially important in an age in which inclusive language is becoming more the norm, and people reading Scripture without any biblical background may too easily assume that a word like “men” or “brothers” means only males. To be a Christian is by definition to be loved by God, who showed his love for us by sending his Son (Rom 5:8–10). This may be what Paul means by speaking of the Thessalonians as “taught by God to love each other” (1 Thess 4:9; see Rom 5:8).
